UNITED STATES: FCC Began 37 GHz , 39 GHz, and 47 GHz License Auctions

Back

As announced, the FCC has started its auction for licenses for the upper 37 GHz, 39 GHz, and 47 GHz bands. Bidding started on December 10th. According to the FCC, this is the largest quantity of contiguous spectrum available in the millimeter-wave bands. There will be a clock phase (which has already started) and then a second phase in which first-phase winners can bid for portions of the spectrum. There will be certain benefits for those who relinquish their spectrum usage rights to make new licenses available. Some companies are already testing for 5G, particularly for the 39GHz band, such as Ericsson, Intel, Nokia, and Huawei. AT&T is also expected to use this band after losing last year’s bid to Verizon.
