SRI LANKA: New Type Approval Rules Enter Into Force June 2021

Back

After the initial publication on Dec 16th, 2020, The Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (RTTE) Type Approval Rules 2020 of Sri Lanka have entered into force on June 15th, 2021. After this date, all vendors importing and selling RTTE in Sri Lanka should obtain type approval under the new scheme. This also implies that each importer will be responsible for holding its own TA certificate for importation purposes. Once the initial certificate has been issued, the importers could use the type approval number used under Standard Type Approval process to obtain their own TA certificate through Simplified Type Approval Process, which would require a representative sample.

Other important changes in the process also include:
-All type-approved RTTE shall have a label permanently affixed on the packaging of RTTE and the label is obtained from TRCSL with an additional fee.
-A sample shall be submitted along with the application, which will be retained for a period of two years.
-The validity of the certificate is 4 years
-For the renewal process, it’s necessary to apply 60 days prior to the expiration date.

These devices are exempted from Type Approval:
a. Short-range infrared remote control equipment includes TV remote controls, garage door opener;
b. RTTE embedded in Desktop Computers and Laptops that use short-range radio technologies such as WiFi, Bluetooth;
c. Transmitter equipment with output power below 50 mW;
d. RTTE is installed in a vehicle as part of it such as car navigation units, remote car keys that use short-range technologies such as WiFi, Bluetooth;
e. Individuals who brought RTTE into the country for their personal use under Section 27.
