Earlier this year, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in order to ensure that electronic equipment entering the South African market meets all quality-performance standards. According to the MoU, the process to issue Certificates of Compliance for Electromagnetic Interference/Compatibility (EMI/EMC) will be reviewed in order to ensure consumer rights are not being violated, in addition to strengthening the conformity assessment procedures. Furthermore, it’s important to note that after the sign of the MoU, the electronic equipment (non-telecommunication) is under the scope of ICASA to support the compliance process that SABS used to carry out alone.
