Nicaragua: New General Law of Convergent Telecommunications

Back

On November 6th, 2024, the National Assembly of Nicaragua published Law No. 1223/2024, known as the General Telecommunications Convergent Law, which will replace the current Law No. 200/1995. This new law is set to enter into force one year after its publication. The Ley General de Telecomunicaciones Convergentes modernizes the regulatory framework to address current technological advancements, such as 5G networks, Internet of Things (IoT), and mobile internet services, marking a significant step toward aligning Nicaragua’s telecom regulations with global trends.

Unlike Law No. 200/1995, which primarily focused on traditional telecommunications services, the new law broadens the scope to include a wider array of technologies and sectors. The updated law introduces a more comprehensive approach to convergent services, enhancing regulations for product certification, radio spectrum management, and telecom infrastructure, and aligning them with the latest international standards.

This reform is expected to strengthen the telecommunications industry, foster innovation, and attract foreign investment while creating a clearer and more effective regulatory environment for both operators and consumers in the digital age.
