Malaysia: Public Consultation on Full Migration to IPv6 in Malaysia: Impact on Product Compliance

Back

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched a public consultation to discuss the complete adoption and migration to Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6), with a proposed timeline for full implementation from 2025 to 2028.

This transition is necessary due to the depletion of IPv4 addresses, driven by the exponential increase in connected devices. Feedback from industry stakeholders is requested by 31 October 2024.

The shift to IPv6 will impact a broad range of products, particularly data networking equipment, telecom equipment, consumer electronics, and infrastructure devices. Companies will need to ensure that all internet-enabled products are fully IPv6-compliant, as equipment relying solely on IPv4 could become obsolete in this market.

Manufacturers and compliance teams should prepare for potential updates to product firmware, network infrastructure, and future product designs. The industry is advised to monitor this regulatory shift closely to maintain market access and meet Malaysia’s IPv6 transition requirements.
