In favor of new technologies and 5th generation cellular, the Ministry of Communications (MoC) is carrying out a plan to close the 2-3 generation networks. The plan consists of three phases:
– Phase A – Prohibition of commercial import of mobile devices that support only old technologies as of January 1, 2022. Notice will be issued to all relevant parties, such as operators, importers, device sellers, consumers, etc.
– Phase B – As of January 1, 2023, disconnection from the network of new mobile devices that support only old technologies, including car handsfree devices and M2M end equipment. Operators will be required to provide a 2nd and 3rd generation service to existing subscribers by the time the networks close. A message will be sent to all relevant parties such as operators, importers, device sellers, etc.
– Phase C and Final: Closure of Generation 2 and Generation 3 – December 31, 2025. The old networks will close after a significant period of time given by the Ministry for the preparation of the general public, commercial importers, and companies in the private sector.
