ISED Notice Displaces Existing Fixed Service Assignments in the Frequency Band 5850–5925 MHz

Back

During the month of February, the Innovation, Science and Economic Development of Canada (ISED) released a notice regarding the “introduction of vehicle-mounted Dedicated Short-range Communications (DSRC) devices in the Band 5850-5925 MHz,” replacing fixed service assignments in that frequency range.

It is key to note that “DSRC on-board vehicles units will operate on a license-exempt basis and will be certified under the applicable Radio Standards Specification (RSS).” This introduction came due to vehicle-to-vehicle DSRC technology maturing and developing rapidly when compared to roadside infrastructure technology since it can operate anywhere and is not dependent on roadside infrastructure.
