The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) has announced new market surveillance measures for products covered under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021. Effective July 5, 2024, the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) will oversee the random sampling and testing of electronic goods to ensure compliance with BIS standards. This process involves purchasing samples from the open market and submitting them to BIS-recognized laboratories for rigorous testing.
Manufacturers and licensees must bear the costs of surveillance and are required to update their contact details, provide necessary documents, and cooperate fully with the surveillance activities to avoid penalties under the BIS Act, 2016. Surveillance orders will be issued to registered manufacturers, who must comply promptly to ensure their products meet the required standards.
These enhanced measures are part of MeitY’s ongoing efforts to enforce strict compliance with regulatory standards, ensuring product safety and protecting consumer interests.
