On March 2019, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) indicated the final date to adopt Indian Standards IS 16046 (Part 1): 2018/ IEC 62133-1: 2017 – Nickel System and IS 16046 (Part 2): 2018/ IEC 62133-2:2017 – Lithium Systems would be March 14 th 2020, as of January 2020, BIS emitted a corrigendum stating the new date for adoption is Sept. 30, 2020. With its implementation, the prior version (IS 16046:2015/IEC 62133: 2012) will be permanently withdrawn. The changes introduced in the new version of the standard (Part 1 and Part 2) include the separation of Nickel and Lithium systems in different parts of the standard, the inclusion of button cell requirements as well as the inclusion/modification of test procedures, among others.
By Sept. 30, 2020, the devices that have already been certified under IS 16046:2015 shall be upgraded to IS 16046:2018 (Part 1 or Part 2, accordingly) by testing under the new version and the following request to BIS. Devices that have not been certified yet should comply with the new version to avoid additional steps to update
later on.
