India’s Department of Electronics and Information Technology (Deity) has announced they were postponing the April 15, 2015 implementation date of the BIS requirement for the new products until August 13, 2015. Some of the new products subjected to BIS compulsory registration, are the following:
- Power adaptors for IT equipment
- Power adaptors for audio, video and similar electronic apparatus
- UPS / Invertors of rating ≤ 5kVA
- DC or AC supplied electronic control gear for LED modules
- Mobile phones (expected to be a wide category and include many enterprise products that support cell phone technology/functionality).
BIS adopted the Standard IS16133 (Part1):2015. It deals with the safety requirements of mobile phone handsets and includes the specific absorption rate (SAR) requirements, restriction of hazardous substances compliance, battery safety, EMI, and compatibility (EMC), radio-frequency, protocol, and electrical safety testing. The standard lays down a limit of 1.6 W/kg averaged over 1 g of tissue.In India the information on SAR values shall be made available to the consumer at the point of sale and displayed on the handset itself.
