IFT Opens the 64-71 GHz Band as Unlicensed Spectrum

The Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (IFT) has announced a significant regulatory update by classifying the 64-71 GHz frequency band as unlicensed spectrum. This move aligns Mexico with international regulatory practices, such as those adopted by the FCC in the United States and ETSI in Europe, making it easier for manufacturers and importers to bring advanced wireless technologies to the Mexican market.

This update simplifies market access for advanced wireless technologies, including WiGig devices, ADAS systems, and high-speed connectivity solutions, fostering faster adoption of cutting-edge applications. Manufacturers and importers must ensure compliance with the IFT’s updated requirements to leverage the opportunities this change presents.

The reclassification reflects IFT Opens the 64-71 GHz Band as Unlicensed Spectrum.

Under the new classification, devices operating in this band will no longer require spectrum licenses, reducing regulatory hurdles and expediting market access. However, all devices must comply with updated technical specifications, including strict power limits, interference management protocols, and operational guidelines designed to ensure efficient and interference-free use of this valuable spectrum resource.
