The Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications of Chile has issued Exempt Resolution N° 737, significantly modifying the 2017 technical standard for short-range equipment. This update reflects a crucial shift in how the country handles certification and compliance for devices using 5G and IoT technologies.
Why This Matters
Chile has experienced a sharp rise in certification requests for wireless devices. The growing prevalence of consumer electronics, medical IoT, and 5G standards has created a need for more efficient spectrum management and streamlined regulatory procedures. The resolution aims to address this with a dual-tier system.
Key Changes in Chile Short-Range Equipment Rules
1. Certification Scope Reduced
Only specific categories—like certain medical communication devices—now require formal certification. Notably, new medical data acquisition devices operating at low power within the 430–440 MHz band are now included in this list.
2. QR Code Marking Replaces Certification
Most short-range equipment (e.g., Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee) no longer need full certification. Instead, manufacturers or importers must:
- Ensure emissions meet regulatory standards,
- Provide a Test Report, and
- Affix a compliant QR code linking to a website with detailed technical and commercial information.
3. Transparent Compliance
The QR-linked website must disclose commercial info, technical specs, and conformity declarations. This allows public access to compliance status while enabling SUBTEL to conduct inspections at any time.
