Back

During May of 2017, The Innovation, Science and Economic Development of Canada (ISED) announced their decision from the consultation process that took place during January of 2017 on whether to modify the current technical and policy framework for radio local area network (RLAN) devices that operate within the 5150-5250 MHz frequency band.

What is RLAN?

RLAN is a networking technology that uses radio frequency spectrum to allow high-speed data transfer between compatible devices.

“There has been a widespread adoption of RLAN devices by consumers, businesses, and various industries. The explosion of Wi-Fi-enabled devices is putting pressure on the current capacity of RLAN bands.”

Decision:

“The department will authorize the use of higher power RLAN devices (HPODs), both indoor and outdoor, in the 5150-5250 MHz frequency band under a licensed regime.”
