BRAZIL: ANATEL Seize 9,800 Irregular Devices in One of The Biggest Marketplace Distribution Centers

Back

The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) carried out, together with the Federal Revenue Service of Brazil (RFB), an inspection in the storage and distribution centers of the Mercado Livre online sales platform. Over the past week, Anatel inspectors sealed 9,800 irregular telecommunications products, at an estimated value of R$ 1.2 million. This was Anatel’s first on-site inspection action in distribution centers of online retail networks, known as marketplaces. More than 80 categories of irregular devices were identified, such as cell phone chargers, batteries, TV boxes, headphones, smartwatches, wireless cameras, wireless routers, and microphones.

Approved manufacturers and sellers of telecommunications equipment denounced the sale of illegal products on the online platform to Anatel, at meetings of the National Council for Combating Piracy, an agency linked to the Ministry of Justice. Based on that, in consultations on that marketplace’s website, the Agency’s inspection verified a probable significant quantity of products not approved in the Distribution Centers. Combating piracy. Last week’s inspection activity is part of Anatel’s Action Plan to Combat Piracy (PACP). In 2021, the Agency’s actions removed 2 million irregular products from the market.
