Mauritania – New SRD Licensing Exemptions

Back

Mauritania has officially introduced SRD licensing exemptions, redefining the framework for the use of low power and short range devices (SRDs). With Decision N° 100/2025/ARE/CNR, the Regulatory Authority provides license-free spectrum use for specific device categories, subject to strict technical conditions.

Key Regulatory Changes

Exemptions and Conditions

The regulation, enacted on October 22, 2025, exempts several SRDs—including RLAN/Wi-Fi (2.4 & 5 GHz), drones, medical implants, inductive loops, and wireless microphones—from requiring individual licenses. However, they must conform to emission power thresholds and frequency allocations detailed in Annex 1 of the decision.

For instance, 2.4 GHz RLAN devices are permitted a maximum radiated power of 100 mW e.i.r.p, and various equipment types must adhere to specific channel spacing requirements across frequency bands from 9 kHz to 77 GHz.

Type Approval Still Mandatory

While the spectrum is license-free, commercialization of SRDs remains subject to Type Approval under Decision N° 42/2021/AR/CNR. This means manufacturers and importers must ensure devices meet conformity requirements before market entry.

Compliance and Market Surveillance

Vendors are now obligated to inform users about installation and usage conditions. Updates to User Manuals and product documentation are necessary to align with the new regulation. Additionally, the devices operate on a non-interference and non-protection basis, meaning they cannot claim interference protection from other services.

The Regulatory Authority has initiated a market surveillance regime, allowing inspections at any time. Non-compliant devices can be sealed or dismantled at the user’s expense.
