ACMA Modernizes Australia’s Spectrum Framework
The Australia spectrum plan has been officially updated by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to accommodate emerging technologies and evolving spectrum needs. As of 2 October 2025, the latest version Australian Radiofrequency Spectrum Plan Variation 2025 (No. 1) brings several refinements to frequency band allocations, reflecting ACMA’s commitment to keeping national regulations aligned with international frameworks and innovations.
What Changed in the Spectrum Plan?
This update includes amendments under subsection 10(10) and introduces variations in:
-
Earth station transmitters
-
Fixed service allocation in the 5.6 GHz band
-
Radiodetermination transmitters in the 24 GHz range
-
Frequency allocation for 184–187 THz band
The modifications are designed to enable better frequency utilization, spectrum sharing, and to keep up with international decisions from the ITU World Radiocommunication Conferences.
Importance for the Industry
The updated plan offers enhanced transparency for stakeholders operating or planning to operate within Australia’s radiofrequency spectrum. It also:
-
Informs users about permitted services per band
-
Provides the basis for licensing and assignment
-
Reflects Australia’s role as an ITU member aligning with global standards
ACMA’s spectrum plan review follows a five-year spectrum outlook, making this a strategic tool for tech development, investment, and long-term planning.
