Europe Revises Harmonised Standards in Latest EU RED Update
On May 14, 2025, the European Commission published a significant amendment to Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/2191. This EU RED update introduces revisions and additions to harmonised standards that support compliance with the Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU). These changes reflect technological advancements and a push toward maintaining alignment with evolving market requirements.
New Standards Recognised Under the EU RED Update
The latest EU RED update includes key additions such as EN 301 406-2 V3.1.1 for DECT-2020 NR, and several EMC-related standards for Short Range Devices (SRD), including EN 301 489-3 V2.3.2 and EN 303 661 V1.1.1. Updated references now also include:
- Broadband and wideband systems like EN 303 753 V1.1.1 and EN 303 687 V1.1.1 (6 GHz WAS/RLAN),
- Cellular networks under the EN 301 908 series,
- EMC standards for satellite and GNSS systems (e.g., EN 301 489-19 V2.2.1), and
- Radar and aeronautical communications (EN 303 363-2 V1.1.1).
It’s important to note that several of these standards are associated with specific limitations. In such cases, compliance does not automatically confer presumption of conformity.
Deleted Standards and Transition Periods
The update also eliminates older standards, such as EN 50360:2017 and EN 50566:2017, effective from June 1, 2025, for devices used near the human body. Other standards scheduled for deletion—like EN 301 908-13 and EN 301 893—will lose their presumption of conformity over the next few years, with some transitional periods extending into May 2028.
Related Update on Cybersecurity Standards
This move follows other major regulatory developments like the European Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2025/138, which redefines cybersecurity requirements across digital and connected devices under the RED framework. Both updates are part of a broader strategy to increase resilience and interoperability in EU radio equipment markets.
