The UK’s consumer connectable product security regime comes into effect on the 29th of April this year. It extends to England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
From that date onward, UK law will mandate manufacturers of consumer connectable products (commonly referred to as ‘smart’ products) to adhere to the specified obligations outlined in the Act. These obligations include ensuring that products meet the applicable minimum security requirements.
The regime comprises of two pieces of legislation:
- Part 1 of the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Act 2022; and
- The Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (Security Requirements for Relevant Connectable Products) Regulations 2023.
The PSTI Act received Royal Assent in December 2022. The government published a full draft of the PSTI (Security Requirements for Relevant Connectable Products) Regulations in April 2023 and was signed into law on September 14th, 2023 with the effective date on April 29th, 2024.
