SAUDI ARABIA – SAU decides to mandate USB-C as common smartphone charger by 2025

Back

Starting from January 1, 2025, Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step by opting to establish a uniform charging port standard for both mobile phones and electronic devices. This move entails the adoption of the USB Type-C connector as the exclusive standardized interface.

The joint efforts of the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization, in collaboration with the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission, have resulted in the unveiling of mandatory phases that will ensure the harmonization of charging ports for electronic devices and mobile phones within the Saudi market. The primary objective behind this initiative is to elevate user experiences by standardizing connectors across the Kingdom, with a focus on minimizing additional costs. Furthermore, the initiative aims to provide advanced shipping and data transfer capabilities while aligning with environmentally sustainable practices, thereby reducing electronic waste generation.

The implementation of this mandate will unfold in two distinct stages. The initial phase, commencing on January 1, 2025, will encompass a wide array of devices, ranging from mobile phones and tablets to digital cameras, e-readers, portable gaming consoles, headphones, earphones, amplifiers, keyboards, computer pointers (mice), portable navigation systems, speakers, and wireless routers. Subsequently, the following phase, set to commence on April 1, 2026, will include laptops as well.

In accordance with the new standard, companies and suppliers will be required to adopt the USB Type-C charging port for their products starting from the year 2025 onwards. This transition will be based on specific technical and administrative prerequisites outlined in the provided technical regulations and associated standards.
